Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was required to halt operations for hours when dozens of them entered the country's airspace.
Aviation Problems
The temporary shutdown led to thirty canceled flights impacting thousands of passengers, with airport representatives alerting that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Border security stated that multiple atmospheric balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two balloons ending up precisely above the main terminal.
As many as 14 of the atmospheric instruments launched over the weekend drifted across the capital region, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and near the border with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
At least 11 balloons carrying 18,000 packs of black-market cigarettes have now been retrieved, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to border security officials.
International Illegal Trade
Although causing problems, authorities noted that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - Belarusian smoking products - are not unusual in the Baltic region and Poland."
To date in the current year, numerous meteorological balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been recorded last year.
Cross-Border Effects
Meanwhile, the border area of Poland, which also borders Belarus, has registered in excess of numerous instances in which illegal goods were transported from its neighbor using the weather devices.
Smuggling Techniques
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminals use a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather conditions rather than easier to manage drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are rudimentary tools used by contraband transporters - they are less expensive than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Officials added that "Our services' aim is to seize the largest possible quantities of contraband and to apprehend coordinators and participants so that such operations become unprofitable and do not pose risk to passenger aircraft."
International Concerns
These airspace violations occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the region.
Similar occurrences in neighboring countries have prompted European leaders to speed up talks about enhancing aerial security throughout the region.
