British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French aircraft in a coordinated attack targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syria used by the Daesh militant organization, according to the UK's MoD.
The location, pinpointed through surveillance, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was located in mountainous terrain just north of the historic site of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.
"Our aircraft utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a series of access tunnels providing entry to the depot... initial indications indicate the strike was effective," the ministry announced.
There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the operation conducted Saturday night and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.
The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.
Daesh - also known as the so-called Islamic State - imposed extremist governance over parts of both Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.
"This operation underscores British leadership, and commitment to work closely with our allies, to eradicate any resurgence of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," UK Defence Secretary John Healey stated.
UK warplanes have carried out patrols over Syria to "prevent any attempted comeback" of the group following its military defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.
"I must thank all the members of the UK armed forces participating in this mission for their skill and their courage," Healey said. "Including them were numerous UK service members on duty over the holidays. This operation, to remove dangerous terrorists who pose a risk to our security, demonstrates how UK forces are prepared to act, all year round, keeping Britain secure at home and influential overseas."
During December, the American forces executed what it described as a "massive strike" targeting Islamic State objectives in Syria, after an ambush claimed the lives of two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.
The UN reports Daesh still has roughly 5-7 thousand militants in both countries.
