Together Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Might Make or Break Your Relationship.

Consider this a test for those in enduring partnerships who are fans of horror films: Sit down with your significant other and view Together. This critically acclaimed 2025 movie has now made its launch on a streaming platform via Hulu. Outwardly, it could look like standard physical horror, but beneath Together exists a profound contemplation about our choices in loving our partners.

An Introductory Film Exploring The Nuances of Love

Together is the introductory feature for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It features Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, partners that have remained a couple for ten years. Having wed in real life in 2017, the actors infuse a special spark to their characters, skillfully embodying both the good and bad of a long-term relationship.

The narrative begins when Tim and Millie move from the metropolis to the rural area for her career. A commonly used story element, admittedly, but that’s largely where the cliches cease. Together evolves into as much a psychological exploration of the partnership as it is a body horror flick.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While trekking near their country house, a tempest descends, and Millie and Tim fall into an underground cave. After being trapped overnight there and eventually escaping, a strange force takes hold of the duo. This force induces a otherworldly bond between them that goes far beyond typical partnership.

The complete narrative is a methodically building horror experience, interspersing elements of fever-dream horrors, unsettling (but tastefully done) body horror, and authentically humorous exchanges (sometimes in the middle of something grotesque). Shanks skillfully blends these components seamlessly and wraps them up in a gradually swelling atmosphere of fear.

Complex Characterizations

A large part of Together is solely the performances of its stars, and they masterfully render numerous complexities to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie's sense of self and emotional bond is waning due to a lack of intimacy. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his hesitance to chase only his floundering music career slowly bubbles to the surface.

In contrast, Tim's character feels trapped and separated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve moved to the country and distant from his network of friends. He dreads the concept of totally forfeiting his personal autonomy in his partner. This fear is further exacerbated by the reality he can’t drive and needs Millie for mobility.

Shanks’ smartest move is that he refrains from painting either of his characters the obvious villain.

The couple face the sort of issues that arise in any relationship after ten years. At their core, they continue to care for one another. They find humor with each other, offer support, and share intimately at times. But under the surface, there’s an inescapable feeling of questioning about their relationship.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the otherworldly presence in Together represent these anxieties of excessive reliance and giving oneself over to a partner, the symbolism does not come across as overly obvious or pretentious. Instead, these visceral horror elements offer a brilliant analogue to the character-driven drama. Both the supernatural and the personal work together symbiotically.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s final act, which is best experienced firsthand, has sparked debate on the story's concluding statement about unhealthy partnerships. Accounts suggest that unattached audience members have seen the movie as a compelling reason for remaining unattached. Meanwhile, certain partners who were in conflict found that the film actually helped them make up.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own interpretation could potentially serve as a revealing measure of how you view relationships. Will the ending sow a sense of discomfort and fear, or a positive outlook on love? Will you recognize your own traits in one of the characters and feel frustration, or simply glance toward your partner and state, “I’d do that for you”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an experiment you can experience right now.
