Wimbledon Adopts Video Review System for the First Time.

The Championships court with replay system

Wimbledon will follow the American and Australian Opens in utilizing replay technology.

Video review technology are set to arrive at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Competitors are granted the option to question certain calls from the official, following the system already in place at both the US Open and the Aussie major.

The new system is slated for use on the main stadium and the number one court for the duration of the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles contests.

This move follows just a season following the All England Club introduced ELC, which brought an end to the longstanding role of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Players cannot to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the umpire to review specific situations, including:

  • Whether a ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a shot touched an opponent's racquet or body during play.
  • Potential hindrance end of a point.

Importantly, there will be an unlimited number on the amount of challenges a competitor can initiate.

Case in Point

An illustrative example took place in Indian Wells last week, where a top player initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.

Draper conceded it was a difficult call for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."

The umpire watched a replay and determined Draper was responsible for hindrance, awarding the rally to his opponent.

Growing Trend

This technology are not exclusive to Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit will have the system in place at every one of its events.

Further Updates

A further change at The Championships this year will be the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This solves situations where spectators have occasionally been uncertain whether a ball was out or in.

Finally, with exactly 100 days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have further announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
